Why You Should Leave LJ

All right, I'm sure no one here needs to be convinced to leave LJ, but if you have friends who do, here's a great post with lots of explanation as to why exactly LJ is full of suckitude: http://asylums.insanejournal.com/refugees_of_lj/1458.html

So, yeah, I feel like I should finally make an LJ post... it's been a while. So, a list of recent news in my life:

-I've gone vegan. Er, mostly-vegan; I'm still using honey and silk, and probably will continue to use angora. It's mostly about animal rights for me, and I don't feel that bees and silkworms are mistreated, or rabbits bred for fur. Eating vegan is not easy on a meal plan, though, even at Goucher! I'm eating... even more peanut butter than I already did. Yum, peanut butter. Also, I'm sad about the fact that I can no longer have eggs in my fried rice or pad thai. At least I know that Thai One On will happily do whatever you request with the pad thai, including taking out the eggs and adding extra tofu and broccoli. It has still been way too long since I've been there. Anyway. Rambling.

-Things with the boy are fantastic as ever. We have season passes to the Renaissance Festival. I have a new and very nice corset. Expect pictures eventually. I forgot my camera on Sunday, and I don't think anyone else took any pictures of me.

-My birthday is on Monday. Give me presents! Just not alcohol, even though I will be legally allowed to drink it--I still won't want to.

-My hair is still long and pretty :D

-I am growing increasingly fed up with Livejournal. (Also, this thread is just hilarious.) I'm planning to delete foundinabottle and will probably delete knitthenight. If I post any writing online it will be at my IJ, clare_dragonfly. (Shameless plug!) I'll probably post knitting content there, too, as well as at Ravelry. At this point, IJ, Ravelry, LHC, and a few other forums replace the communities I'm in fairly effectively. I intend to keep my main LJ, but mostly to keep up with my friends... if you guys would all move to IJ or GJ or something, I'd probably leave LJ. Because... it sucks.

-I AM NOT KNITTING FAST ENOUGH

-I have a spider plant!

-My classes this semester are all really, really awesome. We almost destroyed language in Queer Theory.

Taste

I am SO SICK of people calling the art that got Ponderosa and Elaboration originally suspended "tasteless."

Look, taste doesn't even enter into the equation! Obviously it was to some people's taste, as people did decide to view it. But that's just the point--the pictures were clearly labeled and under a cut. (Ponderosa has said hers was, and I assume Elaboration's was, because that's just what's done in the HP fandom.) If you wanted to view it, you knew what you were getting into. Taste is just not relevant.

Now, I do think that posting pornographic images (and especially cat macros) in comments to news and lj_biz posts was in poor taste. But that's an entirely different situation. That's posting with intent to annoy, in places where people are not expecting to come upon porn (at least at first).

Tastelessness depends on context. If someone says "A woman's place is in the kitchen," that's absolutely tasteless if said in the presence of anyone--male or female--who would be offended by it. (I would hope that would be most people, but that's not relevant.) However, if it is said only in the presence of similarly misogynistic people, then there isn't a question of taste.

Besides, I still haven't seen Elaboration's picture, but there's no question in my mind that Ponderosa's has significant artistic merit--meaning there aren't very many places where it would, in fact, be tasteless.

I'm sure everyone has already heard about burr86's public mocking of fandom, but for those who haven't seen it, I'd like to direct you to this post in Firefox News regarding it. The poster has clearly described exactly the same points I think need to be made as regards what LJ should and should not be doing.
